Dietary habits and blood sugar management
Dietary choices, including seemingly healthy options, can significantly impact blood sugar levels and metabolic stability.
Consuming large amounts of cheese at dinner may lead to elevated fasting glucose levels in the morning. The high fat and protein content in cheese can slow stomach emptying and delay digestion throughout the night. Additionally, the liver may slowly convert proteins into glucose during sleep, while saturated fats can temporarily reduce insulin sensitivity. Limiting portions of aged cheeses to 30 or 40 grams may mitigate these effects.
Certain beverages marketed as healthy, such as fruit juices, smoothies, and some plant-based milk alternatives, can also cause rapid glycemic spikes. Because liquids are absorbed more quickly than solid foods and often lack the fiber found in whole fruits, their sugars reach the bloodstream rapidly. This can contribute to insulin resistance and metabolic imbalances, particularly for individuals managing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
