Dietary habits and food choices impact blood sugar levels

Certain everyday foods can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, similar to sugary sweets. While carbohydrates are necessary for the body, the form in which they are consumed significantly impacts glucose levels. Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, white rice, certain breakfast cereals, and highly processed snacks, tend to have a higher glycemic index, leading to faster and larger blood sugar increases.

Liquid sources of carbohydrates, including sugary sodas, sports drinks, sweetened iced teas, and fruit juices, can introduce significant amounts of sugar into the system without providing a sense of fullness. Additionally, many store-bought sauces, flavored yogurts, granolas, and coffee drinks contain high amounts of added sugar.

To mitigate these spikes, increasing dietary fiber intake is recommended, as fiber slows digestion. Legumes, whole grains, and vegetables are effective sources. Combining carbohydrates with protein and fats can also slow digestion and promote more stable blood sugar levels.

Cottage cheese is highlighted as a versatile, high-protein, and low-calorie food option that can aid weight loss and satiety. It can be used to create high-protein alternatives to bread, such as wraps or waffles, by reducing the need for flour and helping to manage hunger throughout the day.
