Dietary habits and food choices impact blood sugar regulation

Research indicates that regular meal skipping, particularly breakfast, can negatively impact blood sugar regulation. Studies have shown that skipping breakfast can lead to significantly higher glucose levels after lunch in healthy young men and is linked to poorer glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

While structured intermittent fasting may improve glucose control for some, it differs from random meal skipping. Experts recommend consistent meal timing and diets rich in protein and fiber to stabilize glucose levels. Consuming meals within a 12-hour window and avoiding eating immediately before sleep are also suggested strategies.

Regarding carbohydrate choices, pasta generally has a lower glycemic index (GI) compared to most types of rice and potatoes, leading to a slower rise in blood sugar. For instance, cooked pasta typically has a GI between 30 and 60, whereas cooked potatoes can reach a GI of approximately 78. The impact of these foods is also influenced by portion sizes, preparation methods, and accompanying ingredients.
