Dietary habits and material choices impact cosmetic dentistry results

Cosmetic dental procedures, including professional whitening, porcelain veneers, and clear aligners, require specific maintenance to ensure longevity and effectiveness. Dietary choices play a critical role in preserving these treatments. A study of 379 beverages in the United States revealed that 93% had a pH below 4.0, highlighting how frequent consumption of acidic drinks can wear down enamel and restorative materials.

Different materials used in dentistry react uniquely to food and drink. While whitening treatments involve peroxide permeating natural enamel, veneers and crowns often utilize high-grade porcelain, and repairs frequently use composite resins. Porcelain veneers are particularly noted for being stain-resistant and can serve to replace damaged enamel caused by years of acidic food consumption or vigorous brushing.

However, porcelain veneers are not suitable for everyone. Individuals who clench or grind their teeth may risk damaging or breaking the veneers. Additionally, patients with extreme decay or weak tooth surfaces may require alternative dental options.
