Dietary habits and meal timing influence sleep quality

Establishing consistent meal times can help synchronize the body's circadian rhythm and regulate hormones responsible for sleep and wakefulness. Regular eating patterns act as a 'zeitgeber'—an external signal that sets the biological clock, communicating with the central clock in the hypothalamus and peripheral clocks in organs like the liver and pancreas.

To optimize sleep quality and metabolism, experts recommend eating dinner two to three hours before bedtime and maintaining a nightly fast of 10 to 12 hours. Avoiding heavy meals and refined sugars in the evening prevents glucose fluctuations and digestive strain that can disrupt sleep architecture.

For those experiencing evening hunger, light snacks containing specific nutrients may support relaxation. A combination of banana and peanut butter is noted for providing potassium, magnesium, and tryptophan. These components assist in muscle relaxation and the production of serotonin and melatonin, the hormones that regulate sleep cycles.
