Dietary habits and their impact on digestion and physical performance
Eating habits, including the speed of consumption and food choices before physical activity, significantly influence digestive health and bodily functions.
Consuming food too quickly can disrupt the communication between the digestive system and the brain. Because hormones like cholecystokinin and peptide YY require time to signal satiety, rapid eating often leads to consuming larger quantities before the brain recognizes fullness. Additionally, insufficient chewing prevents food from being properly broken down by saliva enzymes, placing extra strain on the stomach.
Regarding physical performance, the timing and composition of pre-workout meals are critical. While nutrition is essential for energy, consuming large amounts of fats, proteins, or high-fiber foods shortly before exercise can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. This occurs because digestion slows down, and during intense activity, blood flow is redirected from the digestive system to the working muscles.
