Dietary habits and their impact on post-meal fatigue

Postprandial somnolence, the feeling of fatigue and mental fog after eating, is a natural physiological response triggered by the parasympathetic nervous system to facilitate digestion. However, the severity of this energy crash is heavily influenced by dietary choices.

Consuming large amounts of refined carbohydrates combined with saturated fats can trigger significant metabolic fluctuations. High-glycemic carbohydrates cause a rapid spike in blood glucose, prompting the pancreas to release high levels of insulin. This process can lead to an influx of amino acids into the brain that induce sleepiness, followed by a subsequent drop in glucose levels that causes fatigue. Additionally, high fat intake can slow stomach emptying, prolonging the digestive process and increasing lethargy.

To maintain stable energy and mental clarity, experts suggest focusing on metabolic stability. Strategies include prioritizing protein and healthy fats—such as raw eggs or coconut oil—over sugary breakfasts to avoid early glycemic spikes. Maintaining a consistent eating pattern with complete meals rather than frequent snacking, and consuming food in a specific order (proteins first, then vegetables, then fats), can help keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day.
