Dietary habits impact energy levels and sleep quality

Dietary choices significantly impact daily energy levels and sleep quality. Afternoon energy slumps, typically occurring between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, are often caused by low blood sugar, dehydration, lack of sleep, or skipped meals.

Nutritionists Lee Cotton and Chelsey Amer suggest maintaining stable energy by consuming balanced meals containing proteins, healthy fats, and fiber-rich carbohydrates. These nutrients help slow digestion and prevent rapid blood sugar fluctuations. Incorporating vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains is recommended to provide sustained fuel.

Regarding sleep hygiene, certain foods and drinks can disrupt rest. Alcohol and energy drinks may interfere with sleep cycles or exacerbate snoring and acid reflux. Heavy, fatty foods like burgers or fried items take longer to digest and can trigger GERD symptoms. Additionally, consuming high-water content foods such as watermelon or cucumber late at night may lead to frequent nighttime awakenings.
