Dietary habits impact inflammation and digestive health
Dietary choices play a significant role in managing digestive health and systemic inflammation. Constipation, which affects between one in four and one in seven people, is often linked to lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity, dehydration, stress, and poor nutrition. While some cases are idiopathic, others are secondary to medications or underlying conditions like diabetes and kidney failure.
To combat inflammation, Dr. Frank Hu from the Harvard School of Public Health recommends incorporating seven specific food groups into a daily diet: tomatoes, olives and olive oil, leafy green vegetables, nuts, fatty fish, fruits, and moderate amounts of coffee. These foods provide essential nutrients such as lycopene, unsaturated fats, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids. Conversely, health experts suggest limiting highly processed meats, refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks, and fried foods to maintain better health.
