Diabetes and insulin resistance linked to dietary habits

Medical experts are highlighting the critical link between dietary habits, insulin resistance, and the rising global impact of diabetes, which causes nearly 4,500 deaths daily. Dr. Duong Thi Phuong from the Nutrition Department at Linh Dam University Medical Center warns that insulin resistance often develops silently before a type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Key dietary habits contributing to insulin resistance include excessive consumption of carbohydrates (such as rice, bread, and tubers), high intake of sugary foods and drinks, and diets high in fat combined with physical inactivity. Prolonged insulin resistance can lead to severe complications, including cardiovascular disease, blindness, and kidney failure.

To mitigate these risks, experts recommend three primary lifestyle adjustments: increasing fiber intake through vegetables and whole grains to slow carbohydrate absorption, prioritizing healthy proteins like fish and white meat over high-fat options, and maintaining regular physical activity to improve insulin sensitivity.
