Dietary impacts of processed meats and cheese on heart health
Dietary choices regarding processed meats and certain cheeses play a significant role in managing blood pressure and cardiovascular health. Processed meats, including salami, sausages, ham, and bacon, are identified as major contributors to high blood pressure due to their high sodium content. Sodium causes water retention, increasing fluid volume in the bloodstream and putting pressure on vessel walls. Experts from the Cleveland Clinic note that these products are often high in both sodium and saturated fats.
Regarding dairy, cardiologist Dr. Cheng-Han Chen suggests that cheese does not need to be entirely eliminated from a heart-healthy diet, provided it is chosen carefully. Fresh mozzarella is recommended as a better option because it typically contains lower levels of saturated fats and sodium compared to other cheeses. It serves as a source of protein and calcium, which can support bone health and weight management. However, consumers are advised to check labels to avoid highly processed varieties with excessive salt content.
