Dietary strategies and home remedies for cold and flu season

As the cold and flu season approaches, various dietary strategies and home remedies are recommended to support the immune system and alleviate symptoms.

Nutritional support through specific foods is a key focus. Citrus fruits, kiwi, and berries are highlighted for their high vitamin C and antioxidant content. Bananas are noted for being easy to digest, while cherries may assist with sleep due to melatonin. Vegetables such as carrots, kale, and spinach provide essential vitamins and minerals, and spices like ginger, turmeric, garlic, and cayenne pepper are suggested for their anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties.

Hydration and warmth are also vital. Warm liquids, such as chicken soup or bone broth, can help with hydration and use steam to clear nasal congestion. For symptom management, experts suggest using saline nasal sprays, humidifiers to combat dry air, and honey for coughs in adults and children over one year old. However, honey should never be given to infants under twelve months due to the risk of botulism.

In addition to food, traditional seasonal fruits like rosehip and cornelian cherry are recognized for their natural vitamin C content. While wellness shots containing ginger and turmeric are popular, experts emphasize that these should complement, rather than replace, a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
