Dietary patterns and biological age in seniors
Recent nutritional studies have highlighted specific dietary patterns that impact biological aging and health outcomes in seniors.
A four-week study conducted by the University of Sydney involving 104 participants aged 65 to 75 found that dietary changes can influence biological age. The research, published in the journal Aging Cell, indicated that a diet lower in fat and higher in complex carbohydrates—derived from whole, minimally processed foods—showed the most consistent ability to improve biological age markers, such as cholesterol, insulin, and blood pressure.
Separately, long-term research from the Karolinska Institutet analyzed data from nearly 3,000 individuals over 15 years. The study suggests that for people over the age of 60, long intervals between meals may carry risks. Specifically, those who went more than 12 hours without eating between meals faced a faster accumulation of chronic conditions, particularly cardiometabolic and neurological diseases. This correlation was most pronounced in individuals aged 78 and older.
