Dietary recommendations for cold recovery and immune support

Certain foods can assist in recovery from a common cold by supporting hydration, strengthening the immune system, and easing symptoms such as sore throats, coughs, and nasal congestion.

Bananas are gentle on the digestive system and contain fructans, which may support immunity. Berries like blueberries and raspberries provide antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Warm liquids and soups are beneficial; soup steam can help move mucus, while the liquid aids hydration. Carrots, rich in beta-carotene, and leafy greens like spinach, which contain vitamins C and E, also support immune function.

Spices and specific vegetables can target congestion; for example, cayenne peppers may help thin mucus, and capsaicin can soothe coughs. Citrus fruits, including oranges and lemons, provide essential vitamin C and folate. Additionally, chamomile tea offers anti-inflammatory benefits, pomegranate juice provides antimicrobial effects, and cherries may assist with sleep through melatonin. While honey can soothe coughs in children, it should never be given to infants under one year old due to the risk of botulism.
