Dietary recommendations for maintaining liver health
Medical experts have shared dietary recommendations to support liver health and maintain its vital functions, such as nutrient processing and blood sugar regulation.
Hepatologist Michael Sheh suggests Greek yogurt, particularly plain varieties without added sugar, as an ideal snack due to its high protein and low carbohydrate and sodium content. He emphasizes that a balanced diet rich in fiber, protein, fresh fruits, and vegetables is essential, noting that fish and chicken are excellent protein sources within a Mediterranean-style diet. Additionally, research has linked regular black coffee consumption to a lower risk of liver damage and liver cancer.
Gastroenterologist Kunal Gupta recommends incorporating nuts into the diet, as they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins, which can aid in satiety and weight management. Gupta notes that dietary habits beneficial for general health, such as those reducing the risk of diabetes and heart disease, also benefit the liver.
