Dietary risks and chronic kidney disease awareness
According to data from the World Health Organization, chronic kidney disease affects millions of people globally, with approximately one in seven adults suffering from the condition. Notably, about 90 percent of those affected are unaware of their status because early symptoms are often overlooked.
Dietary choices play a critical role in kidney function. While no food is strictly forbidden, certain items force the kidneys to work harder to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. Nutritionist Melanie Betz identifies processed meats—such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and salami—as a primary concern due to their high sodium content. High sodium intake can contribute to hypertension, a leading cause of kidney disease, and increase the risk of kidney stones.
In addition to processed meats, packaged and processed foods are highlighted as significant contributors to dietary risks, as they often require less home preparation but contain higher levels of additives and sodium.
