Dietary strategies for managing hepatic steatosis

Hepatic steatosis, commonly known as fatty liver, is a condition that can progress silently toward inflammation, fibrosis, and more severe complications if lifestyle habits are not modified. According to nutrologist Dr. Mariana Wogel, dietary patterns play a central role in managing and potentially reversing the condition.

Diets high in sugar, ultra-processed foods, sweetened beverages, and excessive fats contribute to hepatic fat accumulation and worsen insulin resistance. Dr. Wogel emphasizes that there is no isolated formula for reversal; treatment must begin with a consistent dietary routine to reduce metabolic overload.

Recommended dietary priorities include: - Whole or minimally processed foods: Vegetables, legumes, fruits, beans, and whole grains to help control glycemia and provide antioxidants. - Proteins: Eggs, fish, chicken, and lean meats to preserve muscle mass and provide nutrients like choline and methionine. - Healthy fats: While saturated fats should be limited, high-quality fats from extra virgin olive oil, avocado, almonds, sardines, and salmon can be beneficial for metabolism when consumed in appropriate amounts.
