Dietary study shows impact of high carbohydrate and fat intake on kidney health
A 13-week study conducted on 40 male Wistar rats has revealed that diets high in carbohydrates and fats can lead to significant changes in kidney function. The research, published in the journal ‘Prostaglandins & Other Lipid Mediators’, observed markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in the subjects.
The animals were divided into four groups: one receiving standard feed and three receiving diets enriched with either carbohydrates, fats, or proteins. The most notable differences were found in the groups consuming high-carbohydrate and high-fat diets. Researchers analyzed blood and kidney tissue samples to assess biochemical parameters and histopathological changes.
While the study highlights how dietary composition affects kidney tissue, researchers noted that these animal results cannot be used as direct proof that such diets cause chronic kidney disease in humans. Kidney dysfunction is often linked to diabetes and hypertension and can progress to renal failure without early symptoms.
