Dietary timing and food choices impact metabolic health and sleep

Scientific evidence suggests that the timing and composition of evening meals significantly impact metabolic health and sleep quality. According to biologist Isabel Raya, the human body processes nutrients differently throughout a 24-hour cycle due to circadian rhythms. Consuming meals too late can disrupt glucose management and insulin sensitivity, as the body is biologically designed for maintenance rather than active energy processing during sleep.

For individuals over 50, dietary choices become even more critical as metabolic and digestive changes can fragment deep sleep. Gastroenterologists advise avoiding spicy foods, saturated fats, caffeine, and refined sugars late in the evening to prevent acid reflux and glycemic spikes. Conversely, incorporating foods such as almonds, tart cherries, and fatty fish may promote better rest due to their magnesium, melatonin, and omega-3 content.
