Dietary triggers for migraines and food sensitivities

Dietary choices can act as hidden triggers for migraines in sensitive individuals. While triggers vary by person, certain foods may provoke or worsen attacks.

Potential triggers include fresh bread and yeast-based products, such as bagels and donuts. Additionally, very ripe bananas and avocados may cause headaches due to tyramine, a natural compound that increases as these fruits mature. Research published in the journal ‘European Neuropsychopharmacology’ suggests that tyramine may trigger migraines by affecting norepinephrine release, potentially leading to changes in blood vessel diameter.

Citrus fruits, including oranges, grapefruit, and lemons, are also identified as possible triggers for some people. Experts recommend keeping a food and symptom diary to identify specific patterns and dietary connections.
