Saxony-Anhalt CDU campaign event with Hallervorden sparks controversy

Ninety‑year‑old comedian Dieter “Didi” Hallervorden joined CDU state‑lead candidate Sven Schulze on a four‑night tour titled “Kultur braucht Freiheit” ahead of the Saxony‑Anhalt Landtag election. The events, held in Halle, Magdeburg and scheduled for Dessau and Naumburg, attracted about 600 attendees each. Hallervorden used the platform to denounce defence spending, promote peace and, in a background video, displayed a Gaza protest image reading “Stoppt den Völkermord in Gaza”. The image prompted a swift rebuke from the federal CDU. General‑Secretary Franziska Hoppermann told Bild that “there is no genocide in Gaza” and affirmed the party’s support for Israel and Ukraine. Hallervorden said his involvement aims to prevent an AfD victory, warning that the far‑right could reach 40 % of the vote. The CDU framed the events as a dialogue on freedom, democracy and the role of art, while stressing that artistic expression must respect party limits. The controversy has drawn national media attention and forced the party to distance itself from the comedian’s statements.
