Dieter L. Kaufmann, renowned German chef, dies at 89

Dieter L. Kaufmann, a prominent figure in German haute cuisine and long-time proprietor of the hotel-restaurant ‘Zur Traube’ in Grevenbroich, has passed away at the age of 89.

Kaufmann began his career with an apprenticeship as a pastry chef before training as a chef in Düsseldorf. His professional journey included international experience at the Grand Hotel Eden in Montreux, Switzerland, the Grand Hotel Saltsjöbaden in Sweden, and the Savoy and Mayfair hotels in London. In 1962, he took over ‘Zur Traube’, which became a landmark of gourmet gastronomy under his leadership.

Under his direction, the restaurant earned its first Michelin star in 1973 and a second in 1983, maintaining the two-star status until 2009. Kaufmann received numerous accolades, including being named Chef of the Year by Gault Millau in 1994 and by the magazine ‘Der Feinschmecker’ in 2000. He closed the restaurant in 2014 after 52 years of operation.
