Dietitian warns of health risks from excessive sugar consumption
In observance of World Sugar Awareness Week, dietitian Fatma Tuğba Şölen from Sivas Numune Hospital has issued warnings regarding the hidden dangers of excessive sugar consumption in modern diets.
Şölen noted that sugar is frequently present in unexpected foods, including honey, molasses, and jams, as well as packaged goods like chocolate and wafers, and beverages such as fruit juices and sodas. Excessive intake is linked to several health issues, including weight gain, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and dental cavities.
To mitigate these risks, Şölen recommends making sustainable dietary adjustments rather than radical restrictions. Suggested alternatives include choosing water or ayran over sugary drinks, and opting for milk-based desserts or fresh fruit instead of syrup-based sweets. She also emphasized the importance of reading product labels to ensure conscious consumption and portion control.
