Dietitians warn flavored lattes can equal meal calories
Dietitians are warning that certain coffee drinks, specifically flavored lattes, can contain as many calories as a full meal. While a single drink does not slow metabolism, the daily consumption of large, sweetened lattes can make maintaining a healthy weight difficult.
According to dietitian Lisa Jang, just two tablespoons of certain syrups can contain approximately 90 calories and 23 grams of sugar. A significant issue with these liquid calories is that they often fail to provide the same sense of satiety as solid food. This can lead individuals to consume a 300 to 400-calorie latte and still eat a regular breakfast or snack afterward.
Dietitian Lauren Twiggy noted that while these drinks may match the caloric value of a meal, they lack essential nutrients like protein, fiber, and fats that contribute to feeling full. To reduce sugar and calorie intake, experts suggest opting for smaller portions, less syrup, or unsweetened versions. Healthier alternatives include water, unsweetened coffee, and green tea.
