Mexico's DIF expands community centers and free health services in Puebla and Cholula
In San Pedro Cholula, the state and national DIF inaugurated the rehabilitated DIF Pilares “Tlachtli” center, offering a gym, pool, football field, and a range of classes and workshops—including sports, music, chess, carpentry, barbering, jewelry making, cooking, metalwork and computing. The opening was led by Ceci Arellano, president of the State DIF patronage, and municipal president Tonantzin Fernández, and is part of the national DIF’s Community Development Centers program promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Alejandro Armenta.
In Puebla, Mayor Pepe Chedraui and DIF Puebla Capital president MariElise Budib opened the first “Unidad Médica Imparable” at Los Pinos, providing free preventive services such as general medicine, dentistry, laboratory tests, pharmacy supplies and optometry (including up to two pairs of glasses per year). The unit aims to reduce travel costs and improve health access for local families and will be replicated across the city.
The Municipal DIF of Huixquilucan, together with the Association for Preventing Blindness in Mexico (APEC), performed 60 free cataract surgeries for low‑income residents, relieving them of the high cost of private procedures and restoring visual independence.
DIF Municipal Puebla also promoted the “Corre y Comparte Hambre Cero” charity run, scheduled for 28 June, offering 3, 5 and 10 km routes to encourage physical activity while supporting the zero‑hunger initiative for vulnerable populations.
