Brazil and Portugal health experts warn of rising cancer rates
Health authorities and specialists in Brazil and Portugal are highlighting the rising prevalence of various cancers and inflammatory diseases. In Brazil, the National Cancer Institute (INCA) estimates significant new cases of breast and digestive cancers for the 2026-2028 period. Notably, the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) has mandated digital mammography coverage for high-risk women under 40 to improve early detection.
Digestive cancers, including colorectal, stomach, and pancreatic, are major public health concerns. Experts warn of an increase in cases among younger populations, often attributed to sedentary lifestyles and diets high in ultra-processed foods. In Portugal, colorectal cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy, with high rates of stomach cancer also noted.
In response to these trends, various regional initiatives are underway. In Brazil, the ‘Pink October’ campaign is driving local health programs to provide extended hours for screenings and specialized mammography services. Medical professionals emphasize that early diagnosis through regular screenings, such as colonoscopies and mammographies, remains the most effective way to increase survival rates.
