Digestive health experts warn against self-medicating heartburn and reflux
Medical experts are warning against the indiscriminate use of antacids and home remedies to treat recurring digestive discomforts such as heartburn, bloating, and constipation. Dr. Lucas Nacif, a member of the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery, emphasizes that frequent symptoms may mask underlying conditions like gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and require professional medical evaluation rather than self-medication.
Nighttime heartburn is a common issue often linked to gastroesophageal reflux, which occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. This is frequently exacerbated by lying down immediately after eating, as the lack of gravity makes reflux more likely. Experts suggest that lifestyle adjustments, such as eating smaller meals, avoiding late-night dining, and allowing several hours between eating and sleeping, may help manage symptoms.
While stress and emotional factors can influence digestive health, persistent physical symptoms should not be dismissed as purely emotional. Distinguishing between different conditions, such as inflammation of the stomach mucosa (gastritis) versus reflux, is essential for effective treatment.
