Digestive health: managing bloating through diet and movement
Digestive health and bloating can be influenced by dietary choices and physical activity. While yogurt is often consumed to improve gut flora, individuals with significant lactose intolerance may experience increased bloating. This occurs because residual lactose can reach the colon, where bacteria ferment it, producing gases such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. Additionally, industrial yogurts containing added sugars, fruit syrups, or additives like inulin can contribute to fermentation and discomfort, particularly for those with irritable bowel syndrome.
To aid digestion and reduce symptoms like heaviness or gas, light physical movement after meals is recommended. Gentle activities, such as a slow walk or yoga poses like the Cat-Cow stretch, can stimulate intestinal peristalsis and improve blood flow to the digestive system. It is advised to wait 15–20 minutes after eating and to avoid intense exercise, which may interfere with the digestive process.
