Digestive health: Understanding constipation and outlet evacuation issues

Digestive health and constipation can manifest in various ways, ranging from dietary deficiencies to physical evacuation difficulties. Common constipation is often linked to insufficient fiber, dehydration, or lack of physical activity. Dietary aids such as papaya, pears, oranges, and apples can support regular bowel movements due to their fiber and water content.

In contrast, outlet constipation—also known as evacuation difficulty—occurs when stool reaches the rectum but cannot be expelled effectively. This condition can affect individuals who evacuate daily but experience excessive straining, long durations on the toilet, or a sensation of incomplete evacuation. According to coloproctologist Aline Amaro, this may be caused by uncoordinated muscle relaxation or anatomical issues, such as a pouch in the rectal wall or rectal positioning changes.
