Digestive health: Understanding the causes of excessive gas

Gas production is a natural part of the digestive process, but excessive gas can lead to bloating, abdominal distension, frequent flatulence, or pain that impacts quality of life. According to gastroenterologist Dr. Renato Riccio, gas is primarily formed when intestinal microbiota ferment carbohydrates that were not fully digested or absorbed in the small intestine, or from air swallowed during eating and drinking.

It is important to distinguish between actual gas production and the sensation of bloating. In some cases, the intestine may have increased sensitivity or difficulty moving its contents, causing normal volumes of gas to cause significant discomfort. Factors influencing gas formation include diet, intestinal microbiota, digestion, and intestinal function. Certain fermentable carbohydrates found in foods such as beans, lentils, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, and onions can increase symptoms in sensitive individuals.
