Verity tops box office as Tom Cruise's Digger flops

The North American box office saw a significant shift this weekend, as the psychological thriller ‘Verity’ claimed the top spot, while Tom Cruise’s new film ‘Digger’ experienced a major commercial failure.

Directed by Michael Showalter and based on the Colleen Hoover bestseller, ‘Verity’ debuted with approximately $32.6 million in North America and has reached a global total of over $60 million. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett.

In contrast, ‘Digger’, a satirical black comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, struggled significantly. Despite a reported production budget between $125 million and $180 million and an additional $100 million marketing spend, the film earned only about $8 million domestically during its opening weekend. This marks one of the lowest openings in Tom Cruise’s career. The film, which features Cruise as an eccentric oil tycoon, has received polarized reviews, with some critics panning it while others, including Guillermo del Toro, have defended its cinematic ambition.

The poor performance of ‘Digger’ comes at a critical time for Warner Bros., as the studio approaches a merger with Paramount/Skydance.
