Digger film faces massive box office loss and critical divide
The new film ‘Digger’, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, has become a major commercial failure, with estimated losses reaching up to 245 million dollars for Warner Bros. Despite its high budget of over 250 million dollars, the film has earned only 46 million dollars globally.
Critical reception is deeply polarized. Some reviewers have dismissed the film as a pretentious and over-budget disaster. However, several prominent Hollywood figures, including Denis Villeneuve, Ben Affleck, and Alfonso Cuarón, have defended the work. Villeneuve described the film as a ‘furious comedy’ and an ‘important mirror’ that takes significant artistic risks.
The film serves as a satire on power and environmental catastrophe, featuring Cruise as a corrupt oil tycoon whose activities in Greenland trigger an environmental disaster. Co-writer Sabina Berman noted that the film aims to portray how political classes often prioritize economic interests over planetary stability.
