Digger box office failure threatens Tom Cruise and Warner Bros
The new film ‘Digger’, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, has experienced a significant box office failure. Despite a high production budget estimated between $160 million and $180 million, plus approximately $100 million in marketing, the film earned only about $8 million in North America and $20 million globally during its opening weekend.
Industry analysts suggest the film could face losses between $150 million and $200 million, as it would need to earn roughly $300 million to $350 million to reach its break-even point. The film, an environmental satire featuring Cruise as an oil tycoon, received mixed to poor reviews, earning a C+ CinemaScore and a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While the film struggled, the thriller ‘Verity’, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, topped the North American box office with $32.6 million. Tom Cruise has expressed that he focuses on creating lasting cinema rather than opening weekend numbers, noting that he hopes the film will eventually find its audience, similar to how ‘Blade Runner’ achieved cult status after a difficult initial release.
