Digger film faces massive box office failure despite celebrity defense
The film ‘Digger’, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, is facing a massive commercial failure at the global box office. Despite a significant production budget estimated between $160 million and $300 million, the film has struggled to recoup costs, with reports suggesting Warner Bros. could face losses of up to $245 million. The satirical black comedy, which follows an oil tycoon facing an environmental catastrophe, has received polarized reviews, holding a 53% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While many critics have panned the film as being overly ambitious or detached, several high-profile figures have defended the project. Musician Neil Young called it ‘the best film I have ever seen’, describing it as an artful reflection of the current political and social world. Actor Ben Affleck also spoke in support of the film on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, warning that celebrating such a ‘big swing’ could discourage studios from taking creative risks, leading to more ‘homogenized movies’. Actress Anne Hathaway also offered praise, describing the film as ‘smart, trippy, aggressive, funny and ambitious’.
