Digital and AI skills shortages emerge in Ireland and South Africa
Reports from Ireland and South Africa highlight growing challenges regarding digital and technological talent shortages.
In Ireland, the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) warns that the digital skills gap could widen significantly by 2030. As industries such as finance, healthcare, and manufacturing adopt artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity, the demand for specialists is outstripping supply. The report notes that the shortage affects not just technical roles but also positions requiring a blend of sector-specific knowledge and digital capability, potentially impacting national innovation and economic growth.
Similarly, in South Africa, the 2026 Critical Skills Survey by Xpatweb indicates a persistent shortage of ICT specialists. While engineering remains the most cited shortage at 29%, ICT specialists were identified by 25% of employers as difficult to recruit. The survey also highlights that the talent challenge is expanding into emerging technologies, with 22% of respondents noting difficulties in finding skills related to artificial intelligence (AI). These findings are intended to inform government immigration policies and the national Critical Skills List to facilitate expedited work visas for qualified international workers.
