Digital and electronic signature security and methods

Digital and electronic signatures are increasingly used for service contracts, employment proposals, and official documents, offering convenience but requiring caution to avoid fraud. Security experts recommend verifying the sender through official channels, checking that links use HTTPS, and reading all terms—including cancellation penalties and data usage—before signing.

There is a technical distinction between electronic and digital signatures. In Brazil, a digital signature requires an ICP-Brasil certificate. In Portugal and the European Union, qualified digital signatures carry the same legal weight as handwritten ones. In Portugal, the Chave Móvel Digital provides a simple method for signing documents via mobile phone confirmation, while the Citizen Card can be used with a card reader and the Autenticação.gov application.
