Digital and smart key technologies expand across automotive and motorcycle sectors
The adoption of digital and smart key technologies is increasing across both four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles. In the automotive sector, digital keys allow smartphones or smartwatches to act as vehicle keys, enabling locking, unlocking, and engine ignition via Bluetooth, NFC, or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies. Major manufacturers such as Toyota, Lexus, Tesla, Porsche, and Volvo are integrating these systems, which offer the ability to share digital keys with others remotely.
In the motorcycle industry, smart key systems—often referred to as keyless systems—are becoming common in scooters and high-end models. These systems use wireless communication to authenticate a registered electronic key, allowing riders to start engines and unlock seats or fuel caps without inserting a physical key. While these technologies enhance convenience and theft prevention, users are advised to maintain physical keys as backups in case of battery failure or connectivity issues.
