Digital assets and electronic payments expand across Latin America
Latin America is experiencing a significant shift in financial services, driven by the rise of electronic payment systems and digital assets. According to a Chainalysis report, the region’s crypto economy reached $593.8 billion in the 12 months leading to June 2026, a 9.8% year-over-year increase that occurred despite falling global crypto flows. This growth is largely fueled by stablecoins transitioning from investment vehicles to tools for everyday business settlement.
Brazil remains a dominant force, accounting for $252.5 billion, or 43.7% of the regional total. Mexico also showed rapid growth, reaching $77.6 billion, while Argentina and Colombia recorded $88.5 billion and $29.1 billion, respectively. In Mexico, monthly stablecoin cross-border flows reached $1.8 billion in June 2026.
Simultaneously, electronic payment platforms are evolving from simple peer-to-peer transfer tools into integrated financial ecosystems offering immediate credit. Moody’s Ratings warns that while these systems provide convenience and speed, they blur the line between payments and borrowing. This trend poses risks of increased consumer debt and delinquency if loans are approved without rigorous credit assessments. The expansion is also shifting banking competition toward point-of-sale financing and digital customer acquisition.
