Digital camera technology and format performance

Recent evaluations of digital photography technology highlight the technical advantages of using RAW formats over compressed JPG files. While most cameras default to JPG, this format discards up to 80 percent of image data to reduce file size. In contrast, the RAW format preserves all sensor data, offering superior dynamic range, color depth, and flexibility for post-processing adjustments to shadows, highlights, and white balance.

In broader market testing, Stiftung Warentest has reviewed 124 digital camera models, including compact, DSLR, and mirrorless system cameras. The testing covers major brands such as Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, OM System, Panasonic, Pentax, Ricoh, and Sony. High-end mirrorless models range in price from approximately 1,520 to 3,230 euros, while more affordable options are available starting around 420 euros.
