Digital certificates in Brazil: e-Notariado services and technical troubleshooting
The e-Notariado certificate is a free digital identity issued by accredited notary offices in Brazil. It allows users to perform various notary acts online, such as signing deeds, powers of attorney, minutes, wills, and authenticating documents or travel authorizations, through the e-Notariado platform maintained by the Colégio Notarial do Brasil.
Users can obtain the certificate either in person at a notary office or remotely via videoconference, provided there are no restrictions on distance identification. Once issued, the certificate is installed on a mobile device, granting the same legal validity as in-person transactions.
Regarding technical usage, common issues arise when accessing digital certificates through web browsers like Google Chrome. These errors are often not caused by the browser itself but by improper installation in the operating system's certificate repository, outdated drivers for physical tokens, or expired certificates. For instance, in Windows, Chrome relies on the system's certificate repository, meaning files must be correctly imported rather than simply saved to a desktop to be recognized.
