Digital communication trends lead to rise in ‘fexting’ conflicts

Digital text messaging is increasingly leading to interpersonal conflicts, a phenomenon termed ‘fexting’—a combination of ‘fighting’ and ‘texting’. Because text-based communication lacks facial expressions, gestures, and vocal tone, misunderstandings occur easily.

Steffen Pappert, a professor of Germanic linguistics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, notes that many students now favor voice messages over traditional phone calls. A study by the dating platform Parship involving over 3,000 participants highlighted the impact on relationships: 63 percent of respondents reported having argued with a partner via text, and an equal percentage believed that text messaging leads to conflict more quickly than face-to-face conversation. While emojis are often used to mitigate these issues, they do not always prevent confusion.
