Digital connectivity challenges work-life balance and mental health

The rise of digital communication tools like WhatsApp and email has made it increasingly difficult for employees to disconnect from work, even during holidays. While technology allows employers to reach staff anywhere, legal frameworks, such as Article 36 of the Italian Constitution, protect the right to vacation as an inalienable worker right. Being technically reachable does not equate to a legal obligation to respond to work requests during leave.

Psychologically, the difficulty of detaching from smartphones is linked to digital addiction and nomophobia. This phenomenon is driven by neurological reward processes and the fear of missing social connections. Constant connectivity can alter natural attention spans and rest patterns, reinforcing neural circuits tied to immediate gratification and causing anxiety or irritability when the device is unavailable.
