Digital data protection and governance face rising cyber threats

The rapid acceleration of digital transformation is driving a critical need for enhanced data protection. As cyber threats like ransomware and phishing increase, digital vaults are becoming essential for individuals and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to secure sensitive documents against unauthorized access.

Statistics indicate that 65% of companies experienced a cybersecurity attack in 2025, with data breaches rising by 30% compared to the previous year. The average cost of a data breach has reached $1.5 million per affected company, covering direct losses, remediation, and regulatory fines.

In parallel, the governance of research data is becoming a strategic geopolitical issue. The tension between the free flow of knowledge and digital sovereignty is being addressed through European regulations such as the GDPR, the Data Act, and the AI Act. These frameworks aim to establish ethical and sovereign digital regulation, often exerting a global influence known as the ‘Brussels effect’ through the extraterritorial export of European standards.
