Digital dependency and gaming disorder trends in Brazil and Portugal

Research and health experts are highlighting the growing distinction between routine digital consumption and recognized psychological disorders. In Brazil, a market survey indicates that 75% of the population plays digital games, with mobile devices being the primary platform. However, medical professionals emphasize that gaming disorder, recognized by the World Health Organization, is defined by a loss of control and negative life consequences rather than the number of hours spent playing.

In Portugal, studies indicate that 40% of adolescents aged 12 to 16 show signs of problematic internet use, sometimes neglecting basic needs like eating or sleeping. Researchers note that many young people use the internet to manage emotions they cannot otherwise regulate. Globally, it is estimated that between 10% and 17% of the population suffers from some degree of problematic internet use, which can lead to issues such as cognitive atrophy, increased anxiety, and decreased concentration.
