Digital dependency trends impact Italian residents and families
Recent data highlights significant digital dependency among Italians, with 90% of the population reporting they reach for a smartphone when bored. In Reggio Calabria, this figure rises to 91%, where residents also show a high tendency to switch content quickly if it fails to capture immediate attention.
Research indicates that 46% of Italians spend more time scrolling than intended, and 77% use their phones in the 30 minutes before sleep. The psychological impact is notable, as 40% report feeling increased anxiety or stress from negative online content, and 39% find smartphone use hinders mental relaxation.
In response to rising digital usage among adolescents, an initiative titled “A Table Without Screens” has launched in Sardinia. Supported by the Italian Federation of Pediatricians (FIMP) and regional authorities, the project involves 15 restaurants across cities like Cagliari and Olbia. These establishments encourage families to disconnect from devices during meals by providing games and educational materials to promote dialogue and family time.
