Digital divide hinders global access to basic education

A persistent digital divide continues to hinder global basic education, with approximately 2.2 billion people—roughly 30 percent of the world's population—lacking internet access. Many others remain ‘under-connected,’ lacking the reliable broadband, devices, and skills necessary for modern data-driven economies.

In the education sector, over two-thirds of primary schools lack digital tools. This lack of access to digital learning platforms and reliable resources limits the effectiveness of both teachers and learners. While digital technologies like laptops, tablets, and smartphones can enhance teaching methods through secure online platforms and video communication, systemic constraints prevent equitable access.

A UNESCO report highlights significant digital skills gaps, noting that entire communities lack the computers and connections required for progress. Addressing these structural barriers is essential to prevent worsening inequalities and to ensure digital literacy becomes a foundational requirement for all learners.
