Digital driver's licenses clarified in Ensenada and California

Authorities in Ensenada and California are clarifying the usage and limitations of digital driver's licenses and identification.

In Ensenada, the municipal government announced that digital driver's licenses and circulation cards presented via the ‘Identidad Digital BC’ application are valid for municipal transit interventions. Mayor Claudia Agatón Muñiz noted that the digital format facilitates easier verification for citizens. In the event of a traffic violation, officers will record the digital document number on the citation rather than seizing the digital file. The application also allows for offline access to previously loaded documents.

In California, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) clarified that the mobile driver's license (mDL) serves as a digital complement rather than a total replacement for physical identification. While the mDL can be used for identity or age verification at participating businesses and certain TSA security checkpoints, drivers are still required to carry their physical license. This is because not all law enforcement agencies or government institutions currently accept digital versions during traffic stops or official procedures.
