Digital economy challenges financial literacy and increases scam risks for youth

The shift toward a digital economy is changing how children and young adults interact with money, presenting both new conveniences and significant risks. As cash transactions decline in favor of digital payments and online shopping, the invisibility of money can make spending feel less impactful, necessitating early financial education to help children understand the real-world value behind digital transactions.

Young adults and students are particularly vulnerable to sophisticated fraud. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report, Americans aged 20–29 reported over $500 million in internet-crime losses in 2025. Common threats include online shopping and marketplace scams, where fraudulent websites or fake deals target those purchasing dorm essentials or textbooks, and job scams that promise high salaries for remote or flexible work to lure students into fraudulent schemes.
