Digital education trends show high digital literacy in Hong Kong and AI pilots in Kazakhstan

Recent educational assessments and initiatives highlight varying approaches to digital integration in schools. In Hong Kong, PISA 2025 results show that students excel in ‘learning in a digital world,’ scoring 545 points—well above the international average of 500. This indicates strong computational problem-solving and modeling abilities. However, scores in core areas such as science, mathematics, and reading have declined compared to 2022, prompting calls to strengthen foundational knowledge and higher-order thinking skills.

In Kazakhstan, the government is utilizing artificial intelligence to address the educational divide between urban and rural areas. Following PISA 2022 data that revealed significant literacy and science gaps in rural schools, a pilot project has launched in ten rural schools within the Pavlodar and Kyzylorda regions. The initiative aims to expand to approximately 2,600 small rural schools by 2028. The strategy combines distance learning with AI tools designed to analyze student responses and identify knowledge gaps, though experts note that success depends heavily on reliable infrastructure and teacher preparedness.
