Digital energy management initiatives expand in Hesse, Germany
In Hesse, Germany, local municipalities and utility providers are advancing digital energy management initiatives. The municipalities of Fernwald, Grünberg, and Lich are collaborating on a project to digitally monitor electricity, heat, and water consumption in communal buildings. Supported by approximately 718,000 euros from the Hessian Ministry for Digitalization and Innovation, the project utilizes sensors, a wireless network, and a shared data platform to identify energy-saving potential.
Separately, Stadtwerke Hünfeld has issued guidance regarding smart meter installations following promotional outreach from external metering point operators. The utility clarified that the benefits associated with § 14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), such as reduced grid fees, are available through existing local structures and are not exclusive to third-party providers. Stadtwerke Hünfeld also noted that installing a smart meter does not automatically guarantee savings or bonuses, as the fee reductions specifically apply to controllable consumption devices, and warned that voluntary installations may incur additional annual operating costs.
